Scoliosis Corset

Scoliosis Corset

Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) refers to a rotational curvature of the spine more than 10 degrees to the right or left. Changes below 10 degrees are not scoliosis. While the spine curves to the right and left, it also rotates around its axis, that is, it is a 3-dimensional deformity. Scoliosis may present with one or more curves in the spine.

What are the types of scoliosis?

Scoliosis may develop due to a congenital, idiopathic or underlying neuromuscular disease. The most common idiopathic (cause unknown) scoliosis can start in infancy, adolescence and adulthood. The progression of scoliosis differs with the age, gender, type and size of the curvature. Scoliosis is more common in girls. For the diagnosis of scoliosis, radiological examination and manual evaluations should be performed.

What are the symptoms of scoliosis?

  • Head tilted to one side
  • Asymmetry in the chest,
  • One of the shoulder blades is more protruding than the other,
  • Uneven hips and shoulder levels
  • Whether the distance between the arms and the body is equal or not,
  • Complaining that the leg equality is not the same,

Scoliosis, which is caused by the bending of our spine to the side, is a spinal disorder that is not very common, but has a considerable number of victims. Although the cause of this disorder, which is thought to have over 2 million people in Turkey, is generally unknown, there may be several different causes.

Scoliosis may be congenital. In this case, it arises as a result of a problem remaining from the pregnancy period. It can also be seen as a result of cerebral palsy or due to muscle and nerve diseases. It can occur suddenly, usually in a normally developing spine, for no apparent reason. It manifests itself with symptoms such as low back pain, cosmetic defects on the back, and visible lumbar curvature.

What is Scoliosis Brace

Scoliosis The word "Scoliosis" describes a kind of curve in the spine. There is normally a kyphotic curve in the thoracic spine (the part of the spine in the thoracic region). A kyphotic curve resembles the letter "C", with the sign of C open. Although the thoracic spine should be curved, if the curve in a person's thoracic spine is greater than 40 to 45 degrees, it is considered abnormal - or a spinal deformity.

Kyphosis corsets are used to prevent the curvature from progressing and reaching the surgical margin. A good result is obtained with a correct kyphosis brace, some patients require surgery if the angle increases despite the brace.
Scoliosis Brace Benefits

Scoliosis Corset benefits; So how does Corset help with scoliosis?

The scoliosis cluster has two functions:

To reduce the weight / stress applied to certain areas of the spine.
Restricting movement by preventing postures that could further damage the spine.

A stiff scoliosis splint (such as a Boston or Milwaukee splint) aims to prevent the user's spinal curve from progressing as it grows, while a soft corset support focuses on relieving more pressure and creating conditions conducive to faster recovery. For example, they are sometimes used to help patients recover from scoliosis surgery.
